The visual identity system for the European City of Science Katowice 2024 (EMNK 2024) was co-created by a design team consisting of Jan Dybała, Anna Kopaczewska, Mikołaj Hałabuda, Dawid Koruszowic, Hanna Sitarz-Pietrzak, guest typographer Marian Misiak, and myself.

We focused on developing a system that reflects a philosophy of academic synergy, scientific rigor, and the shared intellectual potential of the Katowice region. Our goal was to move away from fragmented institutional aesthetics to build a unified, modern visual narrative for seven collaborating universities working together to reshape the city’s scientific identity.

The design centers on a distinctive asterisk logo—a conceptual reference to the classic footnote and the constant expansion of knowledge—paired with the bespoke typeface Di Grotesk KatoScience, which was created specifically for this project. We meticulously applied this modular system through a comprehensive Visual Information System (VIS) that governs everything from spatial orientation and signage to digital platforms and physical promotional assets. The project resulted in a cohesive, high-impact identity that reinforces Katowice’s status as a premier European science hub and provides a professional, welcoming framework for both the academic community and the public.
